What is the WVRA?

The West Virginia Retailers Association is the voice of the retail industry in West Virginia. The association was founded in 1942 by merchants concerned with advancing and safeguarding the well-being of the retail industry. The Association is recognized by merchants, legislators, state officials, and other trade groups as the spokesman for the retailing industry.

Today, the Association is the retail industry’s major statewide trade association. Whether a local independent merchant of a retail chain, the Association is an active force in promoting the interest and progress of all West Virginia retailers.

The goal of the Association is to create a unified, competitive and profitable retail atmosphere.

The purpose is:

·         - To lobby for better legislation and government rules and regulations

·         - To promote the growth and development of the retail industry

·         - To provide education opportunities for the membership

·         - To provide group benefit programs and information services to help maintain the retailers bottom-line profitability

·         - To hold Annual Meetings to provide the membership with an opportunity to work with the staff and board of directors to plan for a better future, to assimilate information, compare views and in general, have an opportunity to personally have input into the direction of their association.

·         - To be a fact-finding bureau to collect and analyze data related to the retail industry and convey this information to the membership and the public

 

Who the Association Represents

Many types and sizes of retailers constitute the membership of the WVRA, they are individual merchants owning large and small businesses. The make-up includes grocery, shoe, furniture, jewelry, drug, liquor, dry goods, specialty, etc… We also have large department stores, chain operations of all types, banks, and many businesses directly related with the operation of the retail industry.

WV Retailers Association was founded nearly seventy years ago to protect the business interests of retailers throughout West Virginia. WVRA advocates on behalf of its member companies before the government of West Virginia. The goal of WVRA is to represent the legislative, regulatory and political interests of the retail industry. Working at the local, state and national level to develop, exchange, and disseminate information for the purpose of promoting and safeguarding our member companies.

West Virginia’s 21,271 retail businesses employ over 162,788 West Virginians and is responsible for 16% of West Virginia’s GDP. The retail industry employees directly or indirectly 1 in 4 West Virginia jobs paying billions in salaries, benefits and taxes each year.

West Virginia Retailers Association represents businesses across the state including jewelry, grocery, pharmacy, home improvement, department, direct marketers and general merchandise stores. WVRA educates the policymakers of West Virginia on the concerns of retail business.

West Virginia Retailer Association is a non-profit trade association supported by membership investment dues. The association is governed by a Board of Directors representing a wide variety of retailers and businesses throughout the mountain state.

 

West Virginia Retailers Association is the voice of retailing in WV.  The association represents retailers including general merchandise, local independent, department stores, mass merchandisers, supermarkets/grocery stores, pharmacies (local & chain)  and specialty retail such as auto-parts, vision, jewelry, hardware and home improvement stores.

West Virginia Retailers Association was incorporated on January 31, 1942.

The objects set forth by the founding members are as follows:

To encourage and improve business methods in the retail trade; to provide for the interchange and dissemination of knowledge and information among its members relative to, and for the purpose of, promoting and safeguarding their respective businesses; to discourage and abate trade abuses and injurious and unbusinesslike practices; to secure a closer co-operation between retail merchants by bringing them into closer relationship with each other, for the purpose of producing a more helpful condition of retail trade; to advance the interests of retail merchants generally, and to do any and all things useful, proper, lawful and expedient in connection with the objects and purposes hereinbefore set forth, and to have all the rights, powers, privileges and prerogatives incident to or connected with such objects and purposes.
